An Alumni's Story
"Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids gave
me a start. We met when I was a shy high school freshman cast
as Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia. It was a part written
for a tenor, I’m an alto. It was a part written for
a man, I was a young woman. It was the first time a director
had seen something in me, and trusted me with lines and songs
and story. That start took me a long way. I started to find
my feet, not just on stage but in life. Theatre helped me
grow in ways that I desperately needed to, helping me shed
the blanket of shyness and insecurity that I had clutched
so desperately around me. No one else saw that lion in me,
no one else saw the actor. And while I got chorus after chorus
part in high school (or nothing at all) RMTK continued to
nurture the actor in me. I played Nala in The Lion King, and
Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof. I stage managed and assisted
in the office, and I interned, working on the other side of
the summer camp experience as a counselor. Now I am a junior
in College at the University of Puget Sound. I’m majoring
in theatre. I have had leads in college in shows that span
from David Ives one acts, to Chekhov. And I am where I am,
in part, because RMTK gave me the chance when I was fourteen,
to play an incredibly off key Aslan."

Parents
“At the end of just a few weeks, our kids performed
in shows that were remarkable for their professionalism, beauty,
and entertainment value. We were thoroughly impressed by the
results – especially given that the performers were
not subject to auditions or other 'entrance exams.' Without
exception, the children were prepared for their roles and
performed them with joy and confidence."

"RMTK has been extremely instrumental in exposing our
son to high quality theatre. I can’t say enough about
the quality of the people and the facilities they make available
for us. When my wife and I consider why we live in Denver,
one of the keys for us is that this is a world class city.
RMTK is part of what makes us feel this way."
-Rick Webster, parent of twelve year old student-
"Usually with summer camps, especially
if they are intensive as RMTK's summer camp is, my daughter
becomes bored very quickly and disinterested. But every day
after camp when I asked her how her day was, and held my breath
as I waited for the answer, for three weeks each day she said
it was the best day she ever had. This is a place where the
arts are fun, the kids learn, and parents are happy!"
-Molly Robbins, parent of seven year old student-
"My daughter and many other children
like her, have found a place that supports their artistic
aspirations, and allows them the freedom to grow and develop
into life-long artists, and supporters of the art community
as a whole."
-Stacie Gilmore, parent of ten year old student-
"The camp was run in such a professional
manner that it gave the kids an opportunity to see what real
stage performance was like. The staff did a great job of bringing
out the potential in all the kids! My daughter is now hooked
on musical theater.”
- Marti Moore, parent of twelve year old student -
"The most valuable thing is that the
kids learn to work as a group, support each other, and pull
together for the success of the entire show without competition."
-Tom Matejka, parent of ten year old student-
"Thank you to Rocky Mountain Theatre For Kids. You are doing
such an incredible service for so many kids and audiences.
All of the experiences Alice has had with you have been good
ones that she will remember for the rest of her life. You've
turned her childhood into a magical brick road with a wonderful
cast of characters, and you to guide them."
-Anne Skok, parent of eight year old student-
"Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids provides a rich, diverse,
supportive and very professional environment.
This is truly the best theatre program for kids in the Rockies!

"
I was really impressed by the superiority of RMTK's work.
The sets, the choreography, the costumes, the music, the staging,
all were truly spectacular."
-Rose Johnson, parent of seven year old student-
"
So many difficult things, instead of looking difficult, just
looked impressive and convincing."
-Tom Matejka, teacher and parent of ten year old student-
"I want to write you a note and let you know how thrilled
I am with how my children have grown as a result of their
summer with Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids. My younger daughter,
Dasha, has blossomed into a wonderful little actress. I remember
some years ago watching her in a school play. All she could
do was stand on stage and chew on her fingers. Watching her
now is a delight. She stands up in front of a group of people
and speaks with real authority in her voice. And that's not
just on stage. Some weeks back she had a number of friends
spending the night and they all wanted to watch a movie. She
convinced them that it would be more fun to make their own
play. They all agreed. Those girls wrote and produced their
own little play instead of watching television. I was so proud
of my daughter's skill and leadership in getting the other
kids to do something creative. Thank you again for providing
the best summer experience for our kids. The positive impact
of Rocky Mountain Theatre for Kids reveals itself continuously."

Students
"I love that RMTK gives me the freedom to explore my
talents on stage... to act, dance, and more. Instead of forcing
a face onto my character, my character becomes me through
who I am and how I relate to him or her. RMTK really values
what I contribute to my parts."
-Kyra Templewood, 14 (student actress)-
"I like the environment that RMTK creates, because
the focus is not on getting the biggest part, but rather on
making the part unique to the individual. Even the small parts
are great."
-Melanie Kronenberg, 13 (student actress)-
Teacher
"It gives me great joy to see a theatre doing things for
the right reasons, in a positive method, with great ambition...and
succeeding! Perhaps our art isn't dead after all, and for that
hope, for that I thank RMTK more than anything else."
-Michael Emmitt, Music Director and Theatre Teacher-
Theatre
Critic
"One of RMTK's goals is to 'challenge the idea of what
children's theatre is.' They try to do that by bringing artistic
and cultural diversity to the troupe's productions."
